If you are planning to become a government teacher in Bihar, the BPSC TRE is the exam you need to clear. Before you start preparing, it is very important to check whether you are eligible or not. Many students make the mistake of applying without reading the eligibility criteria carefully, which leads to rejection later. So let’s go through everything step by step.
BPSC TRE stands for Bihar Public Service Commission Teacher Recruitment Examination. It is conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission to fill teaching vacancies in government schools across Bihar. The exam covers four levels — Primary (Class 1–5), Middle (Class 6–8), Secondary (Class 9–10), and Senior Secondary (Class 11–12). BPSC TRE 4.0 is the latest phase of this recruitment, with over 46,000 vacancies expected to be filled.

To apply for BPSC TRE, you must be a citizen of India. Apart from that, you should be a permanent resident of Bihar. If you are applying under any reserved category, such as SC, ST, OBC, or EWS, your caste and domicile certificate must be issued by the Bihar government. Candidates from other states can apply for Senior Secondary posts, but they will not get Bihar-specific reservation benefits.
The age limit is calculated based on the cutoff date mentioned in the official notification. You should always check the exact cutoff date from the official BPSC notification before calculating your age.
The minimum age for Primary Teacher posts is 18 years. For all other posts — Middle, Secondary, and Senior Secondary — the minimum age is 21 years.
For the maximum age limit, it depends on your category:
One important thing to remember — always calculate your age as on the official cutoff date, not today’s date or the application date. Even one day over the limit can make you ineligible.
The qualification required depends on which level you are applying for.
Primary Teacher (Class 1–5)
You need to have passed 12th (Intermediate) with at least 50% marks along with a 2-year D.El.Ed. or 4-year B.El.Ed. degree. If you have 45% marks in 12th, you may still be eligible under NCTE relaxed norms. Alternatively, graduates with 50% marks plus D.El.Ed. are also eligible. Candidates with a Master’s degree with 55% marks along with D.El.Ed. can also apply.
Middle School Teacher (Class 6–8)
You need a graduation degree in the relevant subject along with a B.Ed. or equivalent degree like BA.Ed. or BSc.Ed. from a recognized institution.
Secondary Teacher — TGT (Class 9–10)
You must have a Master’s degree in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks, along with a B.Ed. A degree from a recognized university.
Senior Secondary Teacher — PGT (Class 11–12)
You need a Master’s degree in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed. degree. Alternatively, candidates with 55% in their Master’s degree and a 3-year integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed. Degrees are also eligible.
Computer Teacher
For the Computer Teacher post, candidates need a B.E. or B.Tech. degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Government of India.
All degrees must be from universities or institutions recognized by the UGC or the Government of India. Degrees from unrecognized institutions will lead to disqualification.
Qualifying a Teacher Eligibility Test is mandatory for all posts under BPSC TRE. Without a valid TET score, your application will not be accepted no matter how strong your academic qualifications are.
Bihar follows a state-level reservation policy under BPSC TRE. Reserved category candidates get benefits in two ways: relaxation in the upper age limit, and reservation in the number of seats.
The most notable reservation rule is that 35% of total seats are horizontally reserved for women candidates. However, this benefit is only available to women who are permanent residents of Bihar. Women from other states are not eligible for this reservation.
SC, ST, OBC, and EWS candidates get seat reservation as per the Bihar state government norms. To claim any reservation benefit, you must submit a valid caste certificate or income certificate issued by a competent authority in Bihar at the time of document verification.
For Primary level posts, candidates are allowed a maximum of 3 attempts. For other posts — Middle, Secondary, and Senior Secondary — there is no fixed attempt limit mentioned. Candidates can appear as many times as they want, as long as they continue to meet all other eligibility conditions, especially the upper age limit.
In practice, the upper age limit is the biggest constraint. Once you cross the maximum age (even with category-based relaxation), you become ineligible regardless of how many attempts you have made.
You should keep the following documents ready before applying:
Always check the official BPSC notification carefully before filling the form. The official website — this is where all notifications, admit cards, and results are published first.
Make sure your university or college is recognized by UGC or the Government of India. If it is not, your application can be rejected during document verification, even after you have cleared the exam.
Fill your category correctly in the application form. If you claim a category that you cannot prove with a valid certificate, it can lead to disqualification even after selection.
Keep all your documents — especially TET certificates and degree certificates — in order well before the application window opens. Last-minute document issues are a very common reason for missed applications.
BPSC TRE is a great opportunity for students who want a stable and respected career as a government teacher in Bihar. The eligibility criteria are clearly defined, and if you meet all the conditions, there is no reason you cannot apply with confidence. Read the official notification thoroughly, verify every detail, and then proceed with your application. All the best!
