Primary Level (Class 1 to 5)

This level is meant for candidates who wish to teach in primary schools. The exam tests foundational knowledge across five areas:

Language (Hindi/Urdu/Bengali): Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and language development pedagogy.

Mathematics: Number system, basic operations, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and data handling.

Environmental Studies (EVS): Topics related to family, food, shelter, water, travel, and the natural environment, with a focus on how children connect with the world around them.

Child Development and Pedagogy: Theories of child development, learning processes, inclusive education, motivation, and classroom assessment.

General Knowledge: Bihar-specific GK, important national events, basic science and technology, and current affairs.

Each section carries 30 marks, making the total 150 marks.

Middle Level (Class 6 to 8)

For candidates applying to middle school teaching posts, the paper is split into two parts — a general section and a subject specialization section.

Part I – General Section: This covers language proficiency in Hindi, Urdu, or Bengali (comprehension, grammar, writing), and general studies including History, Geography, Indian Polity, Science, Bihar GK, and current affairs.

Part II – Subject Specialization: Candidates choose one subject — Mathematics, Science, Social Science, or a Language subject — and are tested on its content at the Class 6–8 level. This part also includes questions on Child Development and Pedagogy, focusing on how children in this age group learn and how teachers should respond to diverse learning needs.

Secondary Level (Class 9 to 10)

This level is for graduate-degree holders applying for secondary school teaching. The paper is more advanced and subject-focused:

Subject Knowledge (80 marks): Detailed questions from the candidate’s chosen subject — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Mathematics, English, Hindi, and so on — at the Class 9–10 standard.

General Studies (40 marks): Current affairs, Bihar-specific GK, Indian polity and economy, and science and technology developments.

Language (30 marks): Reading comprehension, grammar, and writing ability in Hindi and English.

Senior Secondary Level (Class 11 to 12)

This is the highest level of the BPSC TRE and is meant for post-graduate-level candidates. The subject knowledge section here goes deeper, expecting a thorough command of the subject at degree and post-degree level.

Subject Knowledge – Advanced (100 marks): Comprehensive coverage of the chosen subject at the graduation/post-graduation level. Questions test conceptual depth, not just basic recall.

General Studies and Current Affairs (30 marks): National and international affairs, Bihar issues, economy, polity, and environment.

Language (20 marks): English and Hindi comprehension and expression.

Subject-wise Detailed Syllabus

Mathematics

The Mathematics syllabus covers the number system (natural numbers, integers, fractions, rational and irrational numbers, HCF and LCM), algebra (polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, arithmetic and geometric progressions), geometry (lines, angles, triangles, congruence, similarity, circles, and basic constructions), mensuration (areas and volumes of 2D and 3D shapes), trigonometry (ratios, standard identities, height and distance problems), statistics and probability (mean, median, mode, and basic probability), and data handling through graphs and frequency distributions.

Science

The Science syllabus is divided into Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Physics includes force, motion, laws of motion, light, electricity, magnetism, sound, and forms of energy. Chemistry covers the nature of matter, atomic structure, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals. Biology deals with cell structure, tissues, life processes like nutrition and respiration, reproduction, heredity and evolution, and basic ecology. Environmental science topics such as pollution, biodiversity, climate change, and natural resources are also included.

Social Science

Social Science covers four areas. History spans Ancient, Medieval, and Modern India, with special focus on the Indian freedom struggle and Bihar’s historical contribution. Geography includes physical geography of India and the world, map reading, climate, natural resources, and agriculture. Civics or Political Science covers the Indian Constitution, structure of government, democracy, fundamental rights and duties, and local self-governance. Economics touches on basic economic concepts, the sectors of the Indian economy, poverty, development, money, and banking.

Hindi Language

The Hindi syllabus includes prose and poetry comprehension, grammar topics such as Sandhi, Samas, Karak, Ling, Vachan, and Tenses, vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrases), essay writing, and letter writing. For higher levels, questions on Hindi literature — major authors, literary periods, and movements — are also included.

English Language

English covers reading comprehension and inference, grammar (parts of speech, tenses, active and passive voice, direct and indirect narration, sentence transformation), vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, and idioms), essay writing, letter writing, and report writing. For Senior Secondary level candidates, a basic understanding of English literature may also be tested.

Child Development and Pedagogy

This section appears across all levels and is very important. Key topics include major theories of child development (Piaget’s cognitive development theory, Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Kohlberg’s moral development theory), principles of learning and their classroom applications, inclusive education and how to support children with special needs, factors affecting motivation and learning, formative and summative assessment, the Right to Education (RTE) Act, learning disabilities, and remedial teaching strategies.

General Studies and General Knowledge

This section tests awareness of Bihar’s history, culture, geography, and economy, Indian history from ancient to modern times, the Indian Constitution and political system, general science in everyday life, national and international current affairs, and topics from sports, arts, literature, and awards.

Preparation Tips

Start with the syllabus, not the study material. Many candidates make the mistake of jumping into books before understanding what is actually tested. Read the official syllabus carefully and map out every topic before you begin studying.

Use NCERT books as your foundation. For almost every subject, NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to 12 — and up to graduation level for higher tiers — cover the core syllabus thoroughly. Master these before moving to any advanced resource.

Give serious attention to Child Development and Pedagogy. This section appears in every level and is often where the difference between qualifying and not qualifying is made. Candidates who treat it as an afterthought tend to struggle. Study it with the same seriousness as your core subject.

Make Bihar GK a daily habit. Every level of the BPSC TRE tests Bihar-specific knowledge. Read local newspapers, follow Bihar government announcements, and go through Bihar’s history, geography, and current affairs regularly.

Solve previous year papers. Nothing prepares you better for the real exam than practising actual past papers. They reveal the difficulty level, the types of questions asked, and the areas you need to strengthen. Solve them under timed conditions to simulate real exam pressure.

Build a revision schedule and stick to it. Divide the syllabus into weekly chunks. Make sure to revisit completed topics regularly so that what you studied in week one is still fresh by exam time.

Best of luck. Bihar’s classrooms are waiting for dedicated teachers like you.
