Indian Railways: The Lifeline That Connects a Billion Dreams

Indian Railways: The Lifeline That Connects a Billion Dreams

We live in one of the most diversified countries in the world. In India, there is diversity in nature, people, and their economic structures. Here, people travel by train more than by aeroplane. An estimated 3% of the Indian population flies on planes on a regular basis, and the rest of the people rely on trains. Data shows that Indian Railways carried over 7 billion passengers in the year 2025, representing a significant share of the total population. This has led Indian Railways to become the Lifeline of India’s Transportation Network.

Indian Railways’ Role in Connecting Rural and Urban:

Indian Railways plays an important role in bridging rural and urban areas by facilitating economic activity, enhancing social mobility, and promoting national integration. It provides affordable transport for millions, links farmers to markets, and allows rural populations to access urban-based education and healthcare. As one of the most inexpensive modes of transport, railways ensure rural people’s tendency to travel to the urban areas for better facilities.

How Indian Railways Became the World’s Fourth Largest Rail Network:

Indian Railways flagged off its first passenger train in 1853 between Bombay and Thane and has since expanded into the world’s largest network under a single management.

Evolution through elevation:

1837- First train (freight), The Red Hill Railway started in Madras.

1853- The first passenger service was started between Bombay and Thane.

1925- The Electric train was introduced

1969- The insanely popular Rajdhani Express was launched.

2023- The symbol of modernity, Vande Bharat Express, was flagged off.

It manages the fourth largest national railway system by size, with a track length of 135,207 km running track length of 109,748 km, and a route length of 69,181 km.

How Indian Railways Manages Millions of Passengers Daily?

Indian Railways manages the influx of passengers through a collaboration of technology, infrastructure, and on-the-ground operations. The introduction of computerised systems, starting in 1986, allows for online booking through the IRCTC platform. Indian Railways has an extensive network of over 65,000 km of track connecting over 7,300 stations across the nation. Ground staff and security personnel are appointed at key points to ensure the safety of the passengers and manage crowds, especially during peak hours.

Impeccable service over 170 Years:

  • The first passenger train in Asia ran between Bori Bunder (Mumbai) and Thane, covering a 34 km distance with steam engines.
  • In 1862, the first railway workshop was established in Jamalpur.
  • In 1864, Delhi Junction, the northernmost junction at that time, was established..
  • In the 2000s, the network continued to expand, and new modern systems were introduced.
  •  In 2023, the Vande Bharat Express, a modern, indigenously built train, started off from the same location as the first train, hinting at the undying legacy of the organisation.

Major Railway zones and Divisions of India:

India’s 18 railway zones are compartmentalised, with each zone managed by a General Manager and each division by a Divisional Railway Manager. Notable zones include
