That is why teachers are often considered as the pillars of society, as they shape and guide future professionals’ minds across various fields.

However, the future of teaching in West Bengal currently seems bleak. No Assistant Teacher recruitment exams have been conducted in the state for the past eight years. As a result, the education system in government schools is in a dire state—students are present, but in many schools, there are no teachers to educate them. The Current Status of SSC SLST

The last WBSSC SLST exam was held in 2016. Since then, no teacher recruitment has taken place through WBSSC, meaning that aspirants who had planned their careers around this exam have lost 8-9 crucial years of their lives. Every year, just before Durga Puja, authorities announce that teacher recruitment through WBSSC will commence soon, but time passes, and those promises remain unfulfilled. Each year, candidates watch their dreams slip away.

A few years ago, some teachers were appointed through fraudulent means. However, with time, those illegal appointments were canceled.

On May 5, 2022, an official notification was released regarding WBSSC SLST, clearly stating that teacher recruitment would begin soon. But the notification remained merely an announcement, with no follow-up actions being taken.

When Will the Next Teacher Recruitment Happen?

Since the 2022 notification, the School Service Commission (WBSSC) has not issued any further updates. Every year, during B.Ed. admissions, officials assure students that teacher recruitment will begin soon, but these promises never materialize.

Days turn into months, and months into years, yet the government provides no clear answers about recruitment. Qualified teachers have been protesting on the streets, enduring extreme heat, heavy rainfall, and bitter cold.

Amidst this bleak scenario, on December 31, 2024, an indicative notification was released for the recruitment of WBPSC Assistant Mistress/Master. A few days later, on January 5, 2025, another report surfaced stating that the government had sought detailed information regarding the number of students in each class (from Grade 5 to 12), the current number of teachers and staff in schools, and the exact number of vacant teaching positions.

Since the 26,000 teacher recruitment court case is nearing its conclusion and the 2026 elections are approaching, there is a faint glimmer of hope for aspirants. Will the government finally take the WBSSC SLST recruitment process seriously? Will government schools regain their former glory? Nothing can be said for certain until an official notification is released.
