What Is This Recruitment For?

Based on the exam results, candidates will be recruited as Lower Division Assistants / Lower Division Clerks and similar posts in the Secretariat, Directorates, District offices and regional offices (including Kolkata), under the Government of West Bengal.

  • Pay scale: Level 6, ₹22,700 to ₹58,500, plus D.A., M.A. and H.R.A. as per ROPA 2019.
  • Vacancies: The number will be announced later.
  • Nature of appointment: All appointments will initially be on a temporary basis.

Exam Pattern and Stages

The exam has two stages:

  1. Part-I: Objective type, held first.
  2. Part-II: Conventional (written) type. Only a limited number of candidates who get qualifying marks in Part-I will be called, on a date to be notified later.

After qualifying in Part-I and Part-II, candidates face a test of elementary computer operation and typing. The final merit list is based on the total marks in Part-I and Part-II, provided the candidate qualifies in the computer and typing test.

If you qualify for Part-II but don’t appear, your candidature won’t be considered for the final merit list.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • A pass in Madhyamik (West Bengal Board of Secondary Education) or its equivalent.
  • Elementary knowledge of computer operation, with typing speed of 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali.

You must choose English or Bengali typing at the time of submitting your application.

Age Limit

  • Minimum 18 years, maximum 45 years, as on 01.01.2024. That means born between 2 January 1979 and 1 January 2006.
  • Only the age recorded in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate is accepted.
  • The limits apply to everyone, whether in government service or not.

Age Relaxation

  • SC/ST (West Bengal): 5 years
  • OBC non-creamy layer (West Bengal): 3 years
  • PwBD: the notification says the upper limit is relaxable up to 45 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: with at least six months of continuous service in the Armed Forces, you can deduct your service period from your actual age. If the result is no more than 3 years above the maximum limit, you qualify.

Citizenship

You must be an Indian citizen, or another national declared eligible by the Government of India (who needs a certificate of eligibility). Such a candidate may sit the exam, but an appointment offer comes only after the certificate is issued.

Bengali Language Requirement

  • You must be able to read, write and speak Bengali. This is not required if your mother tongue is Nepali.
  • If your mother tongue is neither Bengali nor Nepali, your Bengali will be tested during the computer and typing test. Average or poor performance can lead to cancellation of candidature.

Reservation

Reservation benefits apply to:

  • SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal only. Those from other states are treated as General.
  • PwBD (40% disability and above) and Ex-Servicemen.
  • Meritorious Sportspersons (MSP) in International Competition, National Competition, Inter-University Tournament, and National Sports/Games for School Education. The notification lists 20 eligible sports: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, Rifle Shooting, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Archery.
  • EWS candidates of West Bengal. Those from other states are treated as General.

Reservation will follow what the Government reports. PwBD reservation will be determined as per Notification No. Labr/85-Emp/EC/1M-01/2025, dated 25.05.2026.

Application Fee

  • Fee: ₹110, plus service charges where applicable, payable online only.
  • Exempt from fee: SC/ST candidates of West Bengal, and PwBD candidates with 40% or more physical disability.
  • OBC candidates must pay the usual fee.
  • SC/ST candidates of other states get no exemption.
  • The fee is non-refundable and cannot be held in reserve for another exam.

How to Apply

  • Applications are accepted online only.
  • Submitting more than one application is strictly forbidden, and duplicates can be cancelled.
  • You must mention one Photo ID (with number and issuing authority) in the application. Options are Madhyamik or equivalent certificate with photograph, Passport, PAN Card, EPIC (Voter ID), Driving Licence, or any other State/Central Government ID. Carry the same original ID to the exam venue.
  • If you claim EWS, SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), PwBD, MSP or Ex-Servicemen status, you must upload the certificate as a PDF of not more than 100 KB. Without it, your application won’t be accepted.
  • Certificates must be issued by a competent authority of West Bengal on or before the closing date.
  • Application is final once submitted. No change is allowed afterward, except through the single edit window.

Edit Window: 28 October to 1 November 2026

  • You can edit some fields, but only once.
  • Log in to your account at Public Service Commission website
  • Check your details carefully and take a printout to spot errors.
  • To change your address, update it first in the Profile Section, then use the Edit option.
  • Required documents must be uploaded during the Edit Window only.
  • No change requests will be entertained after the window closes.

Certificates and Documents

Each category needs a valid certificate from a specified authority:

  • SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer): Issued by the Sub-Divisional Officer in districts. In Kolkata, by the District Magistrate (or authorised ADM), South 24-Parganas, or the District Welfare Officer, Kolkata. OBC candidates must also submit a renewed/revalidated non-creamy layer certificate before the computer and typing test. OBC eligibility follows the Backward Classes Welfare Department notifications cited in the advertisement.
  • PwBD: Certificate from a Medical Board at Government Medical College Hospitals in Kolkata, District Hospitals or Sub-divisional Hospitals.
  • Meritorious Sportspersons: Certificates from the competent authority for each area, such as the Secretary of the National Federation (International), Secretary of the State Association (National), the university’s Dean/Director of Sports (Inter-University), or the Director/Deputy Director of School Education Sports (School games). MSP candidates must also submit the applicable Form 1/2/3/4 with the certificate at the time of the computer and typing test.
  • Ex-Servicemen: Certificate from Army/Air Force/Naval Headquarters showing joining date, service period and release date.
  • EWS: Income and Asset Certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure C) from the Additional District Magistrate (development) in districts, or the District Welfare Officer, Kolkata. It must be renewed/revalidated before the computer and typing test.

If you cannot produce a valid certificate at document verification, your candidature is summarily rejected.

Provisions for PwBD Candidates

  • Candidates with benchmark disabilities and limitations in writing may use a scribe. They are encouraged to bring their own, with educational qualification one step below theirs.
  • Candidates with their own scribe must submit scribe details in the Commission’s proforma at the exam.
  • A certificate (Appendix-I) from the Chief Medical Officer or Medical Superintendent of a government health institution is required for the scribe facility. For blindness, locomotor disability (both arms affected) and cerebral palsy, the scribe is given if the candidate wants one.
  • Compensatory time: 20 minutes per hour for eligible candidates with a valid Appendix-I.
  • Scribe engagement won’t be accepted after application submission.

Negative Marking

There is negative marking of 0.25 mark for each wrong answer in multiple-choice questions. This will also be printed on the question booklet. Avoid blind guessing in Part-I.

The Commission may relax qualifying marks further if a sizeable number of reserved-category posts remain unfilled. It also has discretion to fix qualifying marks for Part-I, each group of Part-II, and the aggregate.

Penalty for Revealing Identity in Part-II

If you write your name, roll number or any identifying mark in a Part-II answer script, 10% of full marks for that paper is deducted from your score.

Tie-Breaking Rules

  1. Higher aggregate marks in English and Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali.
  2. Higher marks in English.
  3. Higher age.

Part-I centres and codes: 11 Kolkata, 12 Baruipur, 13 Diamond Harbour, 14 Barrackpore, 15 Barasat, 16 Howrah, 17 Chinsurah, 18 Burdwan, 19 Durgapur, 20 Medinipur, 21 Tamluk, 22 Bankura, 23 Purulia, 24 Jhargram, 25 Suri, 26 Krishnanagar, 27 Berhampore, 28 Malda, 29 Balurghat, 30 Raiganj, 31 Jalpaiguri, 32 Alipurduar, 33 Coochbehar, 34 Siliguri, 35 Kalimpong, 36 Darjeeling.

  • Darjeeling centre is only for Scheduled Tribe candidates of Darjeeling district and other candidates of the three hill sub-divisions (Darjeeling Sadar, Mirik and Kurseong).
  • Kalimpong centre is for all candidates from Kalimpong district.
  • The Commission may allot an adjacent centre if it can’t accommodate you at your chosen one.
  • You will not be allowed at any venue other than the one on your admit card, and no one can sit the exam without a valid admit card.

Posting Preferences

  • You must indicate preferences among (a) Secretariat Departments, (b) Directorates, and (c) Regional Offices, including District offices of one particular district or Kolkata.
  • Filling in options is mandatory.
  • Vacancies are filled by merit position against your options, subject to availability.
  • Candidates will be recommended against non-joining vacancies only in Regional Offices.

Exam Day Rules

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth and other communication devices are banned inside the premises. Violations can lead to disciplinary action and a ban from this and future exams.
  • Candidates will be frisked at entry points, separately for men and women.
  • Follow all instructions from supervisors and invigilators. Disorderly conduct can mean expulsion, cancellation and debarment from future exams.
  • After the model answers for MCQs are displayed on the Commission’s website, objections must be filed strictly within the specified time limit.

After Selection

  • Selected candidates must pass a Medical Board fitness check and police verification of antecedents. An unfit or adverse report can lead to cancellation.
  • Candidates who take Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali instead of Bengali in Group B of Part-II must pass a departmental Bengali exam during probation, before confirmation.
  • Canvassing, meaning seeking support through officials or outside agencies, disqualifies you.
  • False information about age, qualifications or caste/category can lead to penal action and cancellation, even after an appointment letter is issued.
  • Admission to the exam is provisional until your eligibility is fully verified.
