If you are planning to crack the West Bengal Sub-Inspector of Schools exam, you need a clear plan and not just hard work. In this blog, I share a practical School SI preparation strategy for the 2026 exam that you can follow in 60 days. At the end, you can also download a free PDF with the full day-wise plan and a subject mind map.
Good School SI preparation starts with knowing the paper. As per the last official syllabus released by the West Bengal Public Service Commission, the screening test is an MCQ paper of 100 marks and 90 minutes. It has 50 questions on Education, which are at the B.Ed. standard, and 50 questions on General Studies and Arithmetic. General Studies covers matters of common experience and current events.
Important note: This exam is for an inspection and administration role in the School Education Department, not a teaching post. Always confirm the notification, exam date, marking scheme and negative marking on the official WBPSC website, because details for 2026 can change.

The paper is short, but the competition is tough. A 60-day School SI preparation plan gives you structure, and structure removes confusion. The idea is simple: build the base in the first 21 days, go deeper in the next 19 days, take mock tests for 15 days, and keep the last 5 days only for revision and calm.
Phase 1: Foundation (Day 1 to 21)
Start School SI preparation with the Education section, because it carries 50 marks and is the most predictable part of the paper. In these three weeks, cover the aims of education, philosophies and educational thinkers, sociology of education, and the Constitution with the RTE Act 2009. Then study the history of education, from Vedic times to Macaulay’s Minute, Wood’s Despatch, the Hunter Commission, the Kothari Commission, NPE 1986, NCF 2005 and NEP 2020. Finish the phase with learner and learning theories such as Piaget, Vygotsky, Skinner, Bandura and Maslow.
In parallel, spend about 1.5 hours daily on Arithmetic (percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss) and 1.5 hours on General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, basic Science). Take a weekly test on Days 7 and 14, and a full-length test on Day 21.
Phase 2: Depth and Speed (Day 22 to 40)
Now complete the remaining Education units: individual differences, inclusive education, guidance and counselling, teacher education, curriculum studies, research in education, pedagogy, andragogy and assessment, and technology in education. Give special time to educational management, supervision and inspection. Since the post is Sub-Inspector of Schools, this area deserves extra attention in your School SI preparation.
In General Studies, add West Bengal history, geography and state schemes like Kanyashree and Sabuj Sathi, plus static GK and current affairs. In Arithmetic, move to mensuration, time and work, time-speed-distance, number series and data interpretation. End this phase with a flash-note revision of all nine Education units.
Phase 3: Mock Test Marathon (Day 41 to 55)
This is where School SI preparation turns into exam performance. Attempt 6 full-length mocks of 100 questions in 90 minutes, one every two to three days. After each mock, spend at least two hours on analysis. Write every wrong answer in an error log and note why you made the mistake: concept gap, calculation error, or silly slip. On the days between mocks, repair weak topics and do timed drills.
Phase 4: Final Revision (Day 56 to 60)
Do not start any new topic now. Revise your flash notes, your Arithmetic formula sheet and the last three months of current affairs. Take one final mock on Day 58 in exam-like conditions. On Day 60, rest, check your admit card and exam centre route, and sleep early.

Disclaimer: This blog and PDF are for guidance only. If you have any confusion, please verify the exam pattern, syllabus, dates and rules in the official WBPSC notification for 2026.
Q1. What is the WBPSC School SI exam?
It is the screening test conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission to recruit Sub-Inspectors of Schools in the School Education Department. It is not a teaching post. The role involves school inspection and administration, so your School SI preparation should include educational management and supervision.
Q2. What is the exam pattern for School SI 2026?
As per the last official syllabus, the paper is MCQ-based with 100 questions of 1 mark each, to be completed in 1 hour 30 minutes. It has 50 questions on Education and 50 questions on General Studies and Arithmetic. Please confirm the final pattern in the official 2026 notification.
Q3. Is 60 days enough for School SI preparation?
Yes, 60 days is enough if you study consistently for 6 to 7 hours a day and follow a structured plan. The paper is short and the syllabus is limited. The 60-day School SI preparation plan in the attached PDF splits the time into Foundation, Depth, Mock Tests and Final Revision.
Q4. Which section should I start with?
Start with Education. It carries 50 marks, its standard is equal to the B.Ed. exam, and it is the most predictable section. Once you have a base in Education, add Arithmetic and General Studies in parallel.
Q5. What is the syllabus for the Education section?
It covers educational studies, history, politics and economics of education, learner and learning process, teacher education, curriculum studies, research in education, pedagogy, andragogy and assessment, technology in education, and educational management, administration and leadership.
Q6. What topics come in General Studies?
General Studies is based on matters of common experience and current events. Focus on current affairs, Indian and West Bengal history, geography, polity, economy, general science, and static GK like awards, books and important days.
Q7. What topics should I practise in Arithmetic?
Practise simplification, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time-speed-distance, mensuration, HCF and LCM, problems on ages, number series and data interpretation. Daily timed practice is the key to speed.
Q8. How many mock tests should I take?
Take at least 6 to 7 full-length mocks of 100 questions in 90 minutes during the last three weeks. The real benefit comes from analysis, so spend at least two hours reviewing each mock and update your error log.
Q9. Is there negative marking in the School SI exam?
This depends on the official notification. Check the 2026 notification carefully for the marking scheme. If negative marking is confirmed, avoid wild guessing and attempt the doubtful questions last.
Q10. Which books should I use for School SI preparation?
Use your B.Ed. textbooks and notes for Education, NCERT books up to Class 10 for General Studies basics, and one standard Arithmetic book for practice. Add a monthly current-affairs compilation. Avoid collecting too many books.
Q11. Can I prepare for School SI while working or studying?
Yes. If you have only 3 to 4 hours a day, extend the plan to 90 days, and keep the same order: Education first, Arithmetic daily, General Studies and current affairs in short sessions.
Q12. Where can I download the 60-day School SI preparation PDF?
The PDF is attached to this blog post. It includes a day-wise schedule, a subject mind map, a weekly checklist and a mock test tracker. Print it and tick off each day as you complete it.
Q13. Where can I check the official notification, vacancy and exam date for 2026?
Visit the official WBPSC website regularly for the notification, vacancy details, eligibility, application dates and admit card. Do not rely only on third-party websites for dates.
